The Providence Heart Institute is committed to supporting the health of our communities, no matter where that might be – even out on the racecourse. Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are an important part of any cardiac safety plan to reduce the impact of sudden cardiac arrest. Our goal is to provide free AED’s and training on proper use and maintenance to schools and community organizations throughout Oregon and SW Washington. Since this initiative began in 2017, we have awarded numerous groups and organizations with AEDs through the generosity of others. Help us create safer community spaces by considering adding a donation to your registration today. Just like the Heart to Start program, donations to support this program are managed by the Providence St. Vincent Medical Foundation’s healthier community fund.

Providence Heart to Start is a free 5K training program that began in Portland, Oregon in 2012. Since then, we’ve started a community, and inspired a movement where the 2,000+ annual participants span more than 20 states and 3 countries.
Our communities follow a 12-week training program leading to our goal event, a family-friendly 5K. Rather than focusing on time or speed, we encourage our teammates to go at their own pace, follow our weekly interval training plan, and walk or run toward a remarkable finish. We believe that joining a team gives you a greater chance for success with your own personal health goals that will move you even beyond the finish line, long after our season is over.
Season 12 begins the week of November 27, 2023, and will conclude just ahead of the Providence Heart to Start 5K/10K in partnership with Hood to Coast Race Series. If you are seeking an opportunity to connect with others for encouragement, weekly local meetups in SW Portland, virtual support with online groups, and lots of community celebration, then complete your free registration and join us for Heart to Start – Season 12.
Heart to Start is powered by Basecamp Prevention + Wellness, part of Providence Heart Institute. Our free community programs are made possible by generous donations through the Providence St. Vincent Medical Foundation.
